## Description

Nicki Fleming is a 10-year-old girl who is a natural with animals. She lives on a working Colorado ranch with her parents and younger brother. She is optimistic, generous, and compassionate, and she loves skiing almost as much as she loves animals. Nicki has a hard time saying "no" to people. Whenever anyone asks for her help, she's ready to lend a hand. When Nicki says "yes" to becoming the main trainer of a service dog that she and her mother had planned to train together, Nicki ends up in over her head, and struggles to juggle multiple responsibilities: to her parents, her best friend, her teacher--and to the dog. But in the process of training the lively and spirited Sprocket, Nicki's affection for him grows--even while she keeps reminding herself that she has to give him up to someone who needs him more than she does. Equally important, Nicki learns some important lessons for herself. Book One ends with the with big test--and success!--of Sprocket's potential as a service dog, and Nicki's deep pride in their joint accomplishment.

Review: What is it like to raise a service dog? - Girls ages 8 and up will love this absorbing story of 10-year-old Nicki Fleming, who just can't say "no" to helping her mom raise Sprocket, a mixed breed shelter dog selected by a trainer for his potential to become a service dog. Already responsible for chores on the ranch, Nicki soon finds that raising Sprocket requires considerable time and patience, in addition to straining relationships both at home and at school. The lively plot abounds with conflict as it realistically portrays the ups and downs of raising a service dog. Will Nicki succeed in molding lovable, exuberant Sprocket into a dog who will someday assist a disabled person, or does Sprocket's destiny lie elsewhere? Readers will have to wait until Book Two to find out.
Review: Very loving - I've always loved dogs so when I got this book it really showed me how great they are. I enjoyed reading about Nicki and Sprocket and the training Nicki does for Sprocket.

Our Granddaughter's Godfather recently moved to Colorado and this is where the book takes place and she had asked for and received the American Girl brand service dog for Christmas also--she loves animals and not so much the dolls. She is an avid reader and couldn't have been more excited about reading this book! Would give a five but haven't read the book myself.
