6 stars Superb learning tool
I've been using this for a week now. I have nothing but praise. Its a superb book and the accompanying music is really well done, exceeded expectations. I'll mention that there are no CDs, although several reviews mentioned them. Instead you need to download a zip file from the publisher's site. How to do that is explained on page four of the book, and don't panic, it works flawlessly once you follow the direction in the book and on the website. You do not need to have bought the book from the publisher it will all work out. Perhaps I should give this purchase a mere 5 stars due to that, but I am so pleased with the quality of this product, the book, the written out and excellent solos, the very nice quality of the recordings, that I am going to overlook that and give it an illegal 6 stars. What the book immediately exposed was my bowing, which is not up to playing even the first piece at speed without sounding choppy. Honestly, I thought I was pretty good technically, I play classical pieces and not badly. This book will force any but a really excellent player to rethink their bowing technique. Fast and smooth ain't easy. It easy to learn the solos at half speed, you will really get a feel for how to use arpeggios and interrupted scales to construct a solo. A nice variety of styles as well.I also play guitar, this material is useful to me in that area as well by copying the guitar on the backing tracks I can use it to really improve my chunk, chunk, chunk jazz rhythm playing, an unexpected bonus. The backing tracks are 4-5 times longer than the solos, that makes them very useful, you can even use them for performances. They sound great and make me want to jump up and play. Many reviewers have mentioned the Mel Bay Kliphius Grappelli book. I bought that and received it at the same time. That book has transcriptions only of actual Grappelli solos that one will have to try to find and, more to the point, No transcriptions of the solos that are actually on the CD, which are not close to the same quality as the music provided in the download to the Swing Jazz Violin book. The Mel Bay Kliphouse book does give a bit more explanation of how to construct riffs, so there is some value in it. Sadly, the backing tracks are nearly completely useless in the mel bay book, short and hokey. Leave that one alone, get this Swing Jazz Violin course, its probably all you will need.

Great Lessons To Learn Swing-Jazz Violin
I am a self taught fiddle player with no classical training. My sight reading is slow but I can work through these lessons. I have played music from Mel Bay written by Craig Duncan, in my opinion some of the best fiddle transcriptions you can find, and wanted to learn some swing and jazz standards. These lessons are just what I was looking for. Very well done and each lesson provides a basic rendition of the tune and an advanced version with a lot of good licks that you can apply to other tunes. This is not just a book of transcriptions. Jeremy gives a good explanation before each tune and gives playing tips. I really like this writing style. It is as though you are working with the instructor one on one. A big plus for me are the included cds with all versions of the tunes played slow and fast. There are very good rhythm tracks on the cds to practice with. There is a great video by Dix Bruce for learning swing guitar with Jeremy on fiddle playing Rose Room. In the video you can see Jeremy shifting positions for the tune. Rose Room can be played without shifting but shifting does give it a better sound. Because this book is so good I really don't want to criticize this one little thing but for me at my skill level it would be helpful to have the shifting indicated. Every violin or fiddle player wanting to learn swing-jazz violin should own this book. Jeremy is one of the best violinists that you will ever hear play and is a super instructor.

audio tracks not available
I am disappointed because I intended to use the audio tracks with the book, however I cannot download them using the code in the book. I even tried googling the audio tracks, found them, but the code printed in the book did not work. Not sure yet whether the book will prove useful.

A good beginning
Pros: nice collection of tunes, easy-to-read print.Cons: bare-bones introduction to playing jazz. Not a lot of instruction on playing Grappelli-style, but I suspect the author would rather you develop your own approach to playing.Look at Tim Kliphuis's books if you want more Grappelli, look at Martin Norgaard's for a more in-depth look at jazz improv.

great book
This book is for intermediate to advanced violinists. Upon first look, the music may seem simple to an intermediate player, but to play them well--and up to tempo--requires some good solid practicin! (Some songs may be suitable for beginners)There are plenty of songs and they all include guitar chords and lyrics. I've actually played gigs with songs straight from this book with back-up instrumentalists.Let's compare this book by Jeremy Cohen with Mel Bay's "Getting Into Gypsy Jazz" book:-Cohen's book contains all songs, with a brief description and background for each song. The songs contain a violin melody part as well as a violin solo part. You can play gigs solely from songs in this book if you'd like, as I did. It doesn't teach you how to improvise solos. Instead, the authors write out the solo violin parts for you.-Mel Bay's book is more instructional and contains mostly exercises and etudes. Helpful for learning more about playing violin in the gypsy jazz style. Learning the techniques could help you with improvising.

Can not get downloads for the audio associated with this book.
It appears that the download of the audio is no longer available at the link, given in the book, for this Jazz music. I tried several places including Ebay and all of the downloads give an "access expired" error if you try to download them. Therefore much of the value in this purchase appears to no longer be available as a download. That means no audio used for example audio or Backup recordings is available to help learn this music via download. I did find a listing on Ebay that states that the purchase includes two CD's that contain the recordings put together for this music. I have ordered it that way and hope the CD's come in with good results. Once I receive the shipped package, I will send an update stating how that turns out.Pete C.

Good book, bit of a struggle to download audio files
Book appears very simplistic but blossoms when you have the audio tracks to play along with.I found link provided didn't work it took me to Strings Magazine and no further.I suggest you simply google “audio tracks for swingjazzviolin”. That took me to correct bit of Strings Magazine. Once there you follow the normal purchase process for £0. The password isnt necessary, it throws up an error. As usual on an iPad the download ends up as a Zip file in Files. When you unjip it, preview on clicking the three horizontal lines icon the tracklist is revealed.Bit of a palaver - what? But worth it.
