Originally released in 1978, Nested marked a departure from Laura Nyro's acclaimed early work ('Wedding Bell Blues,' 'Eli's Comin''), with it's lyrical focus on impending motherhood and a more organic sound. Across Nested's 10 self-penned tracks, Nyro also reviews her up-and-down love life, rails against music business greed, and muses on the nature of the universe, backed by instrumental contributions from John Sebastian (The Lovin' Spoonful), Felix Cavaliere (The Rascals), Vinnie Cusano (KISS's Vinnie Vincent), Tony Levin, and Andy Newmark, among others. Largely ignored or misunderstood upon initial release, Nested, Nyro's eighth album, can now be heard as the fulcrum on which her early and later career pivoted. Nested is ripe for reappraisal as one of Laura Nyro's most personal, moving, and artistically successful projects. The new CD reissue of Nested from Iconoclassic Records presents the definitive version of this important musical work. In addition to faithfully reproducing all the elements from the original LP (including lyrics), the Iconoclassic reissue adds an incisive new 1,200 word essay by Michele Kort, author of the definitive Laura Nyro biography Soul Picnic: The Music and Passion of Laura Nyro. Additional photographs of Nyro by acclaimed fashion photographer Adger W. Cowans, who shot the original album cover, enrich the package. The CD is mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer Vic Anesini, making Nested a warm, inviting sonic experience befitting it's lyrical theme.

Unrecognized Masterpiece
Laura Nyro is my very favorite singer. Her music speaks to my soul, the struggle to be a light in a world so often in darkness. While many of Laura's other albums speak strongly to me, most notably New York Tendaberry , I've come to regard "Nested" as Laura's unrecognized masterpiece. As I've played it on vinyl and now CD over the years, the consistent level of writing and emotional focus in "Nested" are impressive. Whereas "Tendaberry" frequently flew to stormy rage & rending sadness, "Nested" is more happy & optimistic, well suited to a mother-to-be.The album begins with "Mr. Blue (The Song of Communications)," a bubbly track where Laura sings, "I've been studying the radar in the sky," almost like she's trying to tune another person like a radio signal. "My Innocence" sways with a jazz tinge in Laura's pop confection with the beautiful lyric, "My innocence, I give to my lover, to his lips; My innocence I give to my cold cold lover; Earth under my feet splits in the sun, the nest blows away, the sweet summer days die young." "Crazy Love" follows with Laura's songcraft melodic & catchy. The set moves to another sterling track, a biographic detailing that seems to speak of Laura re-signing with Columbia rather than going with David Geffen's then-new Asylum Records, "There's nothing we can do, we couldn't get there in time; It's too late, she signed on the dotted line." "Springblown" seems like an unassuming soft track but sticks in my head with its lovely swaying refrain, "I've been waiting baby to set my soul free; Still baby, everytime I see your face, it's like a warm embrace to me." Another incredibly original track follows like fireworks, "The Sweet Sky," "I was mixed up like a teenager, Now I'm gone like the 4th of July." "Light -- Pop's Principle" bubbles with Lydia Nata's percussion sparkling as words of wisdom penetrate, "In your flight, send your love out to the planet's soul cause all are one & all living things they need some light to grow." Laura's amazing set continues with the glorious "Child in a Universe," "I'm just a grain in the universe; I come from Earth, and the Earth is a grain in the galaxy, Could you send some peace on Earth to a child of the universe?" "Nested" concludes with the hopeful, joyful title track. Laura Nyro was at her most joyful on this set. It's a supreme pleasure to have the disc on CD. Bravo!

Beautiful 70's Folk Rock
I just got my newly re-issued CD of Laura Nyro's "Nested" album. It is one of those special albums from my childhood. I was lucky enough as a young music listener to recieve a promo copy of this album (from an unknown source), and even though I was more interested in Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith at the time, I gave it a few spins and it wasn't long before I was hooked.Laura Nyro was one of the most talented singer-songwriters of our generation, she just was not as "popular" or mainstream as say James Taylor or Carole King. But her music was just as good and she was a great performer. What a beautiful voice she had. If you like the 70's soft rock of JT, Carole King, Paul Davis, Bread, etc. you should do yourself a favor and check this album out. It is my favorite, besides her live material, which is equally excellant. I can't say enough about this one. I am so glad that it has been re-mastered and re-issued. Thank-you Icon Classic Records! This gem had been out of print too long. And now that Ms Nyro is gone, her beautiful music is all we have left to enjoy.****Highly Recommended****...and deserving of every 5 star rating this album Will recieve.

Nested Great Album
If you are new to Laura Nyro, then I would suggest checking out New York Tendaberry which I believe is her best álbum. If you like that álbum, check out all the rest. Nested is a personal favorite for me, it got me through some difficult times when I was in college. Mr. Blue is a great song no denying that. For me it's the 2nd side of the álbum that intrigues me the most. The first side is good, very good, but starting with Springblown the álbum seems to go into a completely different dimensión alltogether or at least that how I interpret it. Very sprirtual, very profound, very otherworldly. I love this álbum and perhaps I always will. However, if you check out New York Tendaberry and you like it, I believe you like just about everything else she did and she made a lot of music in her lifetime. Thanks for reading

So Glad It's On CD Now
This is another great album from one of my favorite artists. I've always admired her since her Wedding Bell Blues debut single in 1966, and Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is my favorite album - period. There is something about the combination of her voice and music that is so engaging, and unlike any other artist.Nested continues that tradition with a fine mix of songs. I guess if I had to name a favorite song from this album it would be American Dreamer, but they all excellent, up to her usual standards.I had previously transferred the vinyl LP to a CD and am very happy that a real CD has been issued. The sound quality is excellent; I ordered this from Newbury Comics and it was shipped promptly. Now if only Mothers Spiritual and Season of Lights (both of which I also transferred from vinyl) would be affordably released on CD.. then the collection would be complete. This album is unmistakably Laura Nyro - enough said.

My favorite album from Laura Nyro
After not being able to listen to this gem in its entirety for years, I must now rate this as my favorite by Laura Nyro. I also echo all of the positive remarks from the other three reviewers. I've followed her career from virtually the beginning with More Than A New Discovery, and her work has always been a sincere delight. For what it's worth--in the hopes that more of her entire catalogue is made available--here's my Top Ten List of her albums:1. Nested2. Mother's Spiritual3. More Than A New Discovery/The First Songs4. New York Tendaberry5. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession7. Christmas and the Beads of Sweat8. Gonna Take A Miracle (with Labelle)9. Walk The Dog and Light the Light10.Angel in the DarkYou really cannot go wrong with any of her albums.

Laura's Nested culminates the trilogy preceded by both Smile & Season of Lights!
This album/CD represents the culmination of Laura's music from the mid-to-late 70's. As ground breaking as her 1960's contributions were, I think her late 70's work was the height of her artistry!

At last
Inexplicably unreleased on CD until now, Nested marked the emergence of Laura Nyro's mature artistic identity, gloriously announcing the musical world of her later work with its increasingly rapturous visionary take on life. It was a perfectly sequenced LP from the sadness of relationship-failure in the first song 'Mr Blue' through to the majestic 'Child in a universe' of which there are also happily live performances available, unlike most of the songs here, which is another good reason to treasure it.
