Slinky Malinki, Open The Door

Amazing children's book that I love to share with all my friends!
I absolutely love this book! I grew up with my mom reading me these books and when I had my first kid over three years ago my mom gave me this book. I was so excited to get this book then and then as I read this to my kids I realized I loved this just as much as I always have. My little boys love these books too! The rhyming and rhythm in this book is great and the story is clever and cute. There is a little bit of repetition that my sons likes, because then he can "read" along with me sometimes, but it isn't too much to drive me crazy. The artwork is great too and so there is a ton to look at every day.The author of this book, Lynley Dodd is brilliant and knows how to write a great story. She creates adorable characters, like Slinky Malinki, who are totally entertaining and sweet, I absolutely love these books and I have not found a kid yet who won't sit down with me to read these books. They all seem to find the books really entertaining and I totally understand why!

Excellent for preschool set
I work in a day care center and have been nicknamed Slinky Malinki. Of the different books by Lynley Dodd that I have read, I like this one the best for several reasons. The rhyme patterns are easy. The kids can and do participate with the chorus aspect. It also was a great project book as children used magazine picture collages to create their own "what happens" when Slinky Malinki opens a door. There is also value on teaching that it is a cat and a bird getting into trouble instead of a child or a person. All of Dodd'd books have that element. The illustrations in all the books are also fun. And she is very clever with using the illustrations at the end of each book to help the reader resolve the story line. One note on "Slinky Malinki Opens a Door" is that the type of door handle is more common in Europe or New Zealand than in the USA. It makes it easier for a cat to open the door.

One of our favorites!
I love this book. We got it from the library on a regular basis...and then moved to a town with no Lynley Dodd books in the library! Needless to say, I found it necessary to track a few down for our home. This is a great book for littles to learn literacy skills--predicting what will happen next, inferring what type of room the pair is in based on the stuff they get into, extending the tale by discussing what the family will do or say when they return... By the end my preschoolers were nearly in an agony of giggles over the destruction caused by the rascally pair, and the rollicking rhythm and rhyme were the cherries on top.

My granddaughters LOVE the Harry Maclary books!
Years ago we discovered the Harry Maclary books in the library and read and reread them. I was thrilled to find they had gone back in print. The cadence, rhyming, vocabulary, and wonderful art are top notch! My granddaughters truly enjoy them (and so do I).

One of the best children's books
Linley Dodd is a wonderful children's author and illustrator. This book is her best by far. Her characters are memorable and she doesn't dumb-down language. Children will learn vocabulary from her books-- bonus. My sons (4 & 2) have enjoyed this book for years now. My 2 year old can't quite pronounce the title, but we know when he says "i-i-nky ma-inky" that he wants us to read it to him-- over and over! The mischief Slinky Malinki and Stickybeak Sid get into is just hilarious, going room to room wreaking havoc. The surprise at the end is just as fun! The rhythm and rhyme in this book is first rate, helping keep little ones interested.Highly recommended for 18 months up.

Pick of the Litter - In Love with Slinky Malinki
We found the first Slinky Malinki at the thrift store when my little one was big into cats. I am so glad that I did. We love all of the books and are trying to collect them all! I adore the rhymes which stick in my head and use some great vocabulary building words! The illustrations are so animated, colorful and just plain fun that my little one loves to look at them. The only disappointing part about these books is that they are difficult to come by - probably because nobody gives them up!I highly recommend this and all of the other books in this series! I adore the characters and love to read them out loud!

the kids like it, but we don't come back to read ...
After Slinki Malinki, this is just OK. It's cute, the kids like it, but we don't come back to read it over and over again.

Great books!
My son is dyslexic and in second grade, and reading on grade level (Early Intervention is key here). He really enjoys the Hairy Maclary / Slinki Malinki books, as do I. For him they are very engaging both because they are well written and because the illustrations are wonderful. For me, there is always new vocabulary to teach him and longer words that he has to make an effort to decode, but not so much that he shuts down. Some pages have a few lines of text and on the longer pages there is usually a phrase repeated which also keeps him from feeling overwhelmed. Lynley Dodd is a TERRIFIC childrens author!

Cute book, arrived damaged
Another great Lynley Dodd book for kids, but it unfortunately arrived with the finish on the back cover damaged. Can't gift it. Would otherwise be 4/5 stars.

Lustig
