Some flat file rasps have a smooth edge that doesn't cut, which is useful in some applications. This one has some teeth that stick out along the edges, which is good for what I need them for, cleaning up the corners of mortises. I bought this set because I was looking for 1/2" wide files, and the information said .5". But the flat file is 3/4".
