Way better than expected!
My dad wanted to prepare some exotic dishes as an early holiday party for his ping pong group. One of the dishes on his menu was abalone meat. So I had never had abalone before, but my dad remembers being treated to it as a kid for Chinese New Year. We searched high and low in our area for abalone and what we found weren't meeting my dad's memory of the abalone dish. The ones locally were tiny and tough to chew at $3 per abalone. My dad had me search online for abalone meat and we took a gamble ordering this special type of mollusk in a can. When the meat arrived, my dad had me open it up so that he could check the size, texture, and taste. He said this is EXACTLY the type of abalone meat he had been searching for. The taste of the meat and the brine it was contained in had the umami flavoring he remembered from childhood. It was also firm, but not chewy nor pasty. Personally, to me it was like biting into a freshly cooked shitake mushroom. The size of each mollusk (one per can) was pretty substantial, like the size of my fist. I had no idea that this was considered a delicacy and even in some parts of the world and in parts of the US, certain types of abalone meat is considered illegal. Overall, very happy with the purchase and consider it money well spent considering the rarity of the meat.
