Truly useful - and having the Japanese characters let me use it hunting for things in supermarkets. An extremely good book for anyone living/visiting Japan without the language.Highly recommended

I recently spent a month in Tokyo and I enjoy cooking. I found this book along with a good Japanese cookbook to be very useful both in the market and the kitchen. I would have like it to included a kana (Japanese syllabic writing) to English section, but understand most English speakers are not familiar with this Japanese syllabic writing. Luckily all Japanese know our alphabet and my fellow shoppers were always happy to help me find what I wanted. In fact, I believe they appreciated my interest in their food and culture.

I am studying Japanese, so this dictionary has been helpful in giving me definitions of food terms and detailed descriptions of food items. Also, because I enjoy Japanese food, it's an aid to deciding what to order in restaurants. For example, I ordered something in Osaka that intrigued me, and I wondered what it was and how it was made. The dictionary answered those questions and also supplied the proper Japanese word.

good dictionary on the complicated subject of japanese cuisine. i always carry it to the japanese market in los angeles, little tokyo.

Very helpful and is in Japanese first, then in English. Provides some brands and the descriptions are nicely done, nothing too vague. The book is a good size to throw in your tote or handbag if you are brave enough to be seen with a food dictionary in an Asian grocery store. Slowly walking down the aisles and staring for a long time at the label is my methodology - but this book is helping me shop a bit more concisely

this is great book has all the items the japanses use in cooking as well as ther cooking terms. a must for a japanese cooking learner!

Oh my gosh this is the collest book ive seen on japanese cukture and cuisine. A definite must have.

This was a helpful guide in trying to understand your way around Japanese menu. To be honest though, lots of menus are presented as photographs, which is helpful, but I would suggest this was handy during the first few days of our stay in Japan
