A Great Reference Book for Mah Jongg Players
This is a comprehensive guide for players of beginning and intermediate National Mah Jongg League style of American Mah Jongg. The second half of the book includes a section on Chinese Mahjong. As an instructor of American Mah Jongg classes for community education, I have found this The Red Dragon and the West Wind to be an excellent reference book with its understandable explanations, illustrations, and appendices including a glossary and an expansive index. The copyright date on the book is ten years old, but the book has a current feel to it. The author's blog is also a useful supplement for bringing Mah Jongg rules and strategies up to date. Highly readable!

Mah Jongg made easy
I have always wanted to learn how to play Mah Jongg. I even bought a set, which is an American set, but the instructions that came with it were obviously written by someone whose first language was not English--most likely, Chinese. The instructions were virtually impossible to comprehend, so my Mah Jongg set sat for a couple of years. I finally found a group that plays Mah Jongg and they recommended this book. Up to that point I never realized there was a difference between Chinese and American Mah Jongg. The book is easy to read, well-layed out, and gives excellent explanations to understand the game. The game could appear very complex and possibly intimidating, but this book makes it all make sense. Of course, practice makes perfect! I highly recommend this book. For those that play computer Mah Jongg, be advised you are not playing anything like Mah Jongg. You are just learning tile recognition.

Great Extension of his Website!
Since my oldest son watches a lot of anime, they are always depicted playing mahjong so we decided to learn and found different types from NMJL, MCR, Riichi, HKOS, etc. We started playing NMJL at first since that was the first one I heard about, but soon got drawn to MCR and Riichi.I have to say that I primarily bought this book for the Official Chinese rules but it included everything I ever wanted to know about NMJL rules. This cleared up a lot of misconceptions I have playing NMJL and showing my kids how to play.It is a great read and very detailed for us novice players but includes strategies to build up your game. This book also pairs perfectly and is an extension of his website Sloperama.

Great reference and strategy book
Tom Sloper is recognized as one of the foremost experts on mah jongg versions played all over the world. I'm a new player and this book has helped me understand the history and traditions of the game, as well as how to play American mah jongg. This is a game where knowing the rules and player etiquette is of utmost importance and The Red Dragon - West Wind does just that! I also enjoy the author's sense of humor in his observations of group dynamics that may develop among players, and his take on "table rules" that may be practiced by some groups. When you're a newbie, it's important to know how to "fit in" to keep those eye rolls to a minimum. Thanks, Tom!

Most tips for American Mahjong
i don't play American mahjong. I wanted a book with more strategy That said, this book is the best I've found so far about mahjong. It gave me tips on finding online games which I really like. I got a traditional game from a company called Nine Dragons. I play it when I'm not playing with my mahjong group

Excellent resource for anyone who is looking to learn to play mahjong or American mahjong.
This is an excellent book if you are looking to learn how to play Chinese mahjong or American mahjong. I purchased this book because after learning and playing American mahjong, I wanted to learn how to play the original version without Jokers. Before purchasing this book, I had read many of the articles on Tom Sloper’s website and found them to be helpful, informative and interesting, so that’s why I chose a book written by him. The book is clearly written and well organized. I can see that it will be an excellent resource and I will refer back to it as I begin to play.

Not for the novice
I have been playing Maj Jongg for several years and read Sloper's column on line, so most of the information was not new to me. However, I appreciate having it all in one place for easy reference. The section on history is interesting and so is the listing of over a hundred rules, but wouldn't help a beginner learn to play. There are better books for beginners! I must admit that I didn't read the second part (on Offical Chinese Maj Jongg). I have enough trouble with the American version without confusing myself further!

A comprehensive and well-written book.
I wouldn't recommend the book as an introduction for someone who has absolutely no knowledge of Mah Jongg. Before I read it I used YouTube to get a sense of the game. Then I had a seasoned player show me the basics. Then I bought my own MahJong set and now I'm hooked! This book helped fill in the gaps for me, helped me understand the rules and strategies better. I find it useful as a reference tool. Also, the history section was very interesting.

Not the best mahjong book I have recently read
Not the best mahjong book I have recently read. I dislike the fact that the author mainly uses the American names for the suits throughout the book. The rules, though, are explained plainly and the advice contained is sound.

Mostly a summary of rules
This book doesn't contain much more than a detailed report of Chinese and American rules. It is way too pretentious to claim being a 'winning guide'.
