Nail-Biting Adventurer Around the Americas
Compass South has it all, pirates, ragamuffins, sailing ships, difficult family dynamics, thieves, friendship, and journeys of discovery.New Yorkers, Alex and Cleopatra, twelve years old, have fallen in with a street gang after there father goes off to earn money, and does not return. But when Alex is caught, there only way to escape incarceration is by turning on their gang, which makes them marked. The gang wants to make examples of them, and sends Luther, the leader of the kids, to follow them and exact revenge. As part of their snitching, the police send Alex and Cleo away, and they catch a train to New Orleans in order to make their way to San Francisco where a rich merchant is looking for his long lost twin 12-year olds. There, they meet Boston orphans Silas and Edwin who also are heading to California to claim to be the missing children. Alex and Edwin are shanghaied onto a merchant vessel heading to SF. Cleo and Silas stowaway on a separate ship to try and find their brothers. Both pairs have numerous adventures trying to make it to California, not get caught by Luther, and yet be able to survive the vicissitudes of their perilous voyages.Hope Larson has written a fun adventure story for middle ages and older. Rebecca Mock's lively illustrations perfectly match the story line, and are very engaging. She also does a good job of having the twins look alike, yet also differentiating them so that you are not challenged into remembering who is who. This book sets us up for the second book, but does have a narrative arc that brings some of the story lines to a conclusion. This is satisfying because so many other multi-book series use books to just set the stage, rather than advancing the narrative.

A good read! Well illustrated and fun story! And twins!(x2!!)
I'm very tired and just home from work but since my book came today and I read it and I LOVED IT! So forgive this sleepy review but I wanna gush about it!It’s about two red headed twins who go through hard times of (apparently) joining a gang after their dad goes missing for months. When they find an article in the newspaper about two missing red headed twins - they decide to fake their names and pretend to be the missing twins. Until they run into two OTHER red headed twins with the same idea!!Shenanigans ensue, there are PIRATES! BOATS! SAILING! STORMS! A QUICK JUNGLE SCENE!? LOTS OF DEATH THREATS! (because I mean, pirates and gangs) But ALSO! TWINS! TWO TWINS EVEN!! THAT’S DOUBLE THE AMOUNT !!!If any of that sounds good to you, check out this comic!!

Great story, perfect artwork
I bought this book for the art style. At several pages, I caught myself just being amazed at how the illustrator laid out the page and chose certain color schemes to set the tone. The way the story is paced was also very entertaining. Many aspects of the story (gangs, family separation, helplessness, pirates!, deceit) would be interesting for any audience.

I order Amazon for a public school district. This must be okay to recommend b/c I didn't hear any complaints (and believe me I would have.)

Probably Not My Taste
I tried to read as much it as much as possible, but I wasn’t hooked. I wasn’t even halfway through the story before I stopped reading. This book is probably just not my taste in graphic novels.

I Hope Their Adventure Continues
I like the story especially the 'frenemies' twist. The frenemies factor is like the Harry Potter and Avatar series with a different setting. The illustration is good, you can differentiate each character even though they're twins. I fully recommend this book to tweenies and up.
