I assume is sticky vanilla scented glue and other creepy crawler sticks to them too. They work. I already sprayed the perimeter of the house but I still got spiders surprising us in our 100 year old house. Both my son and I got bit at night and we see them hiding on anything they can that sits in the ground like behind a bookcase, a trash can, under toys etc. This is my third time ordering these. **Q: Are these effective for flies?** A: I found a successful use for it with the cluster fly problem we have in the spring. I put a box vertically in a southern window that the flies liked. It was FILLED with flies in a couple of days! Better than fly paper!
