## Description

Product description About Coast Redwood: World's Tallest Tree! An ancient Coast Redwood, growing deep behind the “Redwood Curtain” in Humboldt County, California, is the world’s tallest living thing. This tree, located in a California State Park, towers nearly 400 feet into the sky, and is approaching 2,000 years of age. Commonly reaching breathtaking heights, the magnificent, column-like Coast Redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens ) is not only the world’s tallest tree, but also one of the world’s most long-lived, with life-spans of more than 2,000 years. Fossil records also indicate that the species is among the most ancient of trees — its lineage dating back 160 million years. At maturity, typical Coast Redwoods tower 175 to 300 feet, and have massive trunks (8 feet to an astounding 20 feet in diameter!) with deeply furrowed, reddish-brown bark. Today, only about 5% of America’s primeval Coast Redwoods remain, most under state and federal protection. This species is truly one of the natural wonders of Planet Earth. COAST REDWOOD CARE As its name implies, the Coast Redwood is a coastal species, native to the foggy, temperate regions of the far northern California coastline. This tree should be grown in areas where winter temperatures only occasionally drop below freezing. It loves misting, and thrives where it can receive a generous supply of water (although, like most plants, it cannot tolerate constantly water-logged soils and definitely enjoys the opportunity to dry out somewhat in-between waterings). The Coast Redwood can withstand some cold temperatures, but will not tolerate prolonged periods of sub-freezing weather. In terms of heat, the Coast Redwood can withstand significant periods of hot weather provided enough water is available. In hot climates, partial shading and occasional misting is advised for the Coast Redwood. In regions with colder climates, the Coast Redwood may be successfully housed indoors temporarily for the cold season, or protected in the landscape through heavy mulching. To boldly go where no tree has gone before... The Jonsteen Company is a California tree company and nursery specializing in Giant sequoia and Coast redwood trees. Born in America's National Parks (c. 1992), we're on a mission to share the knowledge, joy & experience of trees with everyone. Seed-grown in California All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected and licensed by the California Dept. of Agriculture. Trees make it livable. Planting a tree is a simple, optimistic act that makes a profound difference now and in the future of our planet. Trees absorb CO₂, produce life-giving oxygen and improve air quality. Review: Cute, healthy little tree - My tree was packaged really well and arrived in perfect condition. Looks very healthy. I planted it right away and am hoping it does well. Second picture is 8 months later and it’s doing great! Third photo is after having it for 11 months, I can’t believe how healthy and well it’s growing. I love my little tree. Sadly after doing so well for about a year and a half, this past Summer it struggled and finally turned completely brown and died, Oct 2025. I tried to protect it from the intense dry Summer heat, but I think all the wind finally did it in. So sad.
Review: Fabulous - Had this little stick baby for a year, it's doubled or crippled the original size. It survived the winter outside in NC zone 7. Doesn't seem to mind the brutal heat either. Makes me want to have my own redwood forrest.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Plant with potting soil / sand and or?**
A: Use a simple potting mix that does not contain any ingredient that is designed to retain moisture. Add to that simple mix 1/3, by volume, coarse perlite. Redwoods require a well draining/well aerated soil mix. Use a plastic pot with good large drainage hole(s), no catch tray. Any excess moisture needs to be able to flow out and freely away from the pot. Use no rock in the bottom of the pot and do not topdress the pots soil. Watering should be to saturation followed by a good dry down of the pots soil before the next saturation. You are welcome to contact us for good care tips.

**Q: My tree died. How do I get a replacement?**
A: My Sequoia seedling looks very much dead. It arrived very healthy last fall, I believe I am the reason for its death. If i want a replacement I should pay for it, not the seller. Contact the seller and give him your details, and see what he thinks.

**Q: I live in west Texas and in a relatively arid climate, is there a way to train the tree to adapt to the dry heat?**
A: Well if you take a look, we have bald cypress in Texas, which is part of the red wood family. I don’t think the tree would struggle, you just have to take care of it. I have a maple tree, cherry blossom for example and I live in zone 8b, they need more water, less sun light

**Q: We have Deer. What's the likelihood that they are going to chomp my baby redwood seedling to death?**
A: Well...always a good question and a good thing to think about when growing any plant material and introducing something new to your land.

Deer. Deer will do what deer will do. Cage your seedling. Deer will graze plant material just to see if they like it or not, they have to taste it to know. We have a number of deer that pass through the nursery, they will nibble, we have enough trees that a bit of nibbling is not an issue. Do they prefer Coast redwood as a regular part of their diet? They dont seem to, but deer will nibble. Squirrels and goats will also nibble.

Caging your seedling is recommended while it is small.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Happy and growing
*by G***O on February 12, 2026*

The tree came in healthy but has one little dead limb maybe not even an inch long but nothing too major. I love the tree it’s soaking in. It’s water and it’ll be so happy. I think I live in zone 8… so I don’t know how big it’ll get..
