Greatest Hits - The Hollies

Super awesome happy surprise...rare for a greatest hits to surprise you!!!!
I guess I would classify myself as a casual or average fan of " The Hollies" I am 51 years old & remember some of their hits on the radio. When I was around 20 I bought a cassette called " The Hollies Greatest Hits" it contained 12 tracks & was missing the song " The Air That I Breath", I have been replacing my old cassettes with C.D.s over the years & I bought a 9 track c.d. called " The Hollies Hits" but with only 9 tracks I was missing to many good songs so I went looking and found that familiar sudo psychedelic collogue cover that was on the old cassette & saw that the new c.d. had a bonus track & it was the missing song I wanted! I also noticed a c.d. called " The Hollies Greatest Hits" with a simple cover with a cloudy blue sky. "The Hollies greatest Hits" with the blue sky & white clouds had a staggering 47 tracks on it including everything on the other two plus many I had never heard! 47 songs from " The Hollies" well my first thought was I will get 13 great songs & 4 good cover versions & 20 weak filler songs! MAN was I WRONG!!! I never had a clue " The Hollies put out so many solid songs!!! Now I am not saying you are going to love all 47 songs but if your anything like me you are about to discover some real gems you may never have heard!!! Out of the 47 songs on this great sounding two disc set I would be hard pressed to claim 7 of them as filler, probably closer to 4. Another really cool thing about this " Greatest Hits set of The Hollies" is that it follows how every song charted around the world except for the previously unreleased 2003 song called " How do I Survive" a song that sounds like Hall & Oats meet The Doobie Brothers fusion. L.O.L. I almost never recommend the higher priced C.D. but in this case the few extra dollars is well worth it! I never thought I would ever be listening to awesome songs by " The Hollies" in 2017 but that is exactly just what I got done doing... yes that's right many of these songs I have never heard before & it only took listening to one time to know I like them a lot. So much so that this is now " The Hollies Greatest Hits" I can not do without!!! I listened to this on my Blue Ray player because it is the middle of the night...tomorrow I will listen to it on my massive stereo system to see if it has been remastered to play through different speaker channels I will up date you all when I find out. I listened to this " The Hollies Greatest Hits" on my 8 speaker $2000 dollar system & I am happy to report that set on " Stadium" the songs are in stereo creating that feeling of being in a swirling sound tornado!!! One example is the song " Jennifer Eccles" the wolf whistle at the end of the chorus jumps from right to left speaker & when it comes around again it jumps from left back to right. Beautiful sound on every track!!!

The sound quality is very poor.
I don't understand this. It is beautifully packaged, it has a nice booklet, it is not cheap. So, why is the sound quality so poor? It sounds as if it was recorded in a distant barrel with heavy padding so the high frequencies were lost and then, all the frequencies were made more high to compensate. If anyone can help me understand or help me appreciate what I have then please do.

meh
I thought I would like this but besides the hits I knew, the rest left me cold. Guess I should have bought a shorter best of from them if none at all. I like other British Invasion bands of the time but these guys just aren't my cup of tea. Bus Stop is tops from the early days and Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress fooled me into thinking the latter days would be better.

Two thumbs up
This is the best compilation I have seen, so far. It still lacks a few songs to be complete. Due to their global success, it is very difficult to come up with a complete compilation that satisfies everyone in every corner of the world. This one works for me. The sound quality is amazingly good considering how long ago this material was recorded. I give it two thumbs up.

Sensational collection that was well worth the wait!!!
I have been biding my time for a good many years waiting for just the right Hollies collection. There have been several issued over the years but not a single one of them included all of the groups great hits on both Imperial and Epic. Happily, EMI has finally corrected this oversight in a huge way. Issued in 2003, "The Hollies Greatest Hits" features 47 Hollies classics including all of the groups American hits as well as nearly 30 tunes that hit the charts in their native England. The Hollies were not only popular on both sides of the Atlantic, but they also made quite a splash in Australia as well. In fact, over the years the Hollies have had charted hits in around two dozen nations including Finland, New Zealand, South Africa, Israel and Singapore to name but a few. And oddly enough, there were numerous instances where a song would be a hit in two or three nations and not make the charts at all anywhere else. This magnificent collection features all of the groups major hits including classics such as "Bus Stop", "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)", "On A Carousel" and "The Air That I Breathe". In addition, it also features hard to find songs like "Just One Look" and "I Can't Let Go". I have been trying to find that one for years. I was also happy to sample a good many Hollies songs I had never heard before. Many of these tunes had been huge hits in England in the 1960's. Among these, I particularly enjoyed a tune written by Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary called "The Very Last Day". The group also does a nice job on George Harrison's "If I Needed Someone" and on "I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top". Disc 2 also includes "How Do I Survive", a song the group recorded in 2003 especially for this project. Much to my surprise the group sounds just as good as ever."The Hollies Greatest Hits" features a unique 12 page booklet spotlighting the groups chart history in 24 countries around the world. I have never seen anything like it. When I first became aware of this collection I figured there was an awful lot of filler. This is absolutely not the case. Rather, what we have here is a pretty complete anthology of an extremely important British group. I sampled this 2 CD collection courtesy of my local public library. I can assure you that I will be ordering my own copy from Amazon as soon as I press the "Save" key on this review. Very highly recommended.

Just one song, thats all it took yeah,
I have the original vynil at home but bought the cd for the car.As a teenager I lived through every word of every song and though I only have a voice for the shower or the car now after constant sinus damage I cannot help but join in.My husband is the same, I bought him the discs to take away to work with him.Whether you were there in the sixties or just like the Hollies sound this is a superb collection.Highly recommended!!!!!

Hollies Gem
The sound quality of this double CD is excellent and offers a good overall selection of the Hollies early and later hits, many written by themselves. It shows that this band could rock with the best of them or move you to tears - their diversity is truly amazing. Some of the later songs I have found particularly refreshing as I lived and worked abroad for many years and lost touch with the music scene. Personally, although I enjoyed their earlier pop songs, I much prefer the post-Nash years when Terry Sylvester joined the band. His superb, close harmony is second to none, plus as an accomplished musician he took on the role of rhythm guitar - a great complement to Tony Hicks’ amazing guitar skills. Worthy of particular mention on CD 1 are Magic Woman Touch, Sandy, I’m Down and Gasoline Alley Bred (a great up-tempo piece).CD2 contains the beautiful From Boulder to Birmingham which, for me, is the definitive version. There are those who will disagree in favour of EmmyLou Harris (who co-wrote the song), but the Hollies tight harmony, particularly in the closing bars of the song between Terry Sylvester and Tony Hicks, is absolute perfection. A performance of this song is featured on the Dutch Collection DVD – worth buying for this alone! Other lovely ballads of note are Lonely Hobo Lullaby and rock-ballad Write On, and the slow rock Son of a Rotten Gambler. In total contrast, we have the rockin’ numbers The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee, Hey Willy (featuring some fantastic guitar work by Tony) and Star. Sadly, the brilliant Daddy Don’t Mind is somewhat subdued on this CD – catch the raunchy live version on the Dutch Collection DVD or on YouTube – it’s an amazing ‘powerhouse’ performance!Less memorable (for me) are How Do I Survive, Searchin’ and the awful Jennifer Eccles.Whilst they had some of their greatest hits in early 1970s, the Hollies developed and matured and were not afraid to diversify from their original happy pop sound. This period saw some of their best work. Unfortunately, this was not appreciated by the public, the media or their promoters as it should have been, certainly not in the UK and USA – to their shame! In conclusion, a useful anthology of the songs, composers and recording dates is included. This bargain-priced CD is a must for Hollies fans, old and new, and given the fast delivery and quality packaging, you really can’t go wrong.

The Hollies - Greatest Hits
This cd is the Hollies to perfection. The original Hollies, of Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, and Tony Hicks special three-in-one harmonizing techniques as only the Hollies themselves can do, is fantastic and extremely enjoyable listening, along with the great drumming technique of Bobby Elliott."He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, is a truly magnificent classic song, sung with the expertise and excellent voice of Allan Clarke. Wow, what a classic, along with the beautiful lyrics of "The Air That I Breathe" sung again by their Lead Singer, Allan Clarke, who sings this lovely romantic song with such sincerity. The excellent banjo playing of Tony Hicks, in "Stop, Stop, Stop," is wonderful and shows the true expertise of this particular member of the Hollies, who usually plays the guitar and harmonizes with Allan and Graham. All the classic songs from "Just One Look" and other songs, show what a truly magnificent group that the Hollies are.Great Songs, Great Music, Great Group. A must buy product from the Hollies.

Not bad
I reviewed these discs originally on the first disc of 2. But listening to the second disc it is pretty good - nowhere near as good as the original recordings but sounding like the Hollies I remembered. I am glad I bought it bringing back great memories of a time gone by.
