Do you need to have a separate tool for that?** A: The best way to open them is to take a large file & carefully cut a groove around the Geode along any depressions in the shape. Place in on a towel on a concrete floor. Be sure to put on safety glasses! Take a large chisel and place it in the groove. Strike the end of the chisel with a hammer to break the Geode open. Be careful everyone standing near has their safety gasses on as well! **Q: Can use a sharp, big knife or if not, what do you use** A: Please do not even consider attempting this with a knife. That is an E.R. trip in the making. We were quite successful with a hammer and wide chisel. **Q: Does the item include a hammer?** A: If you don't already have a hammer, this item is not for you. **Q: Are they fake** A: They are real just not real impressive. You're better off to buy bigger geodes online. The kit has nothing spectacular you need. My package was full of solid rocks. Took a 5 lb sledge to get the apart. 100% waste of money. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bueno *by on Reviewed in Mexico 1 July 2026* Aunque aún no podemos abrir dos rocas todo está muy bien, solo que no viene de otro color, solo son blancas ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ National Geographic - split open your set of geodes - lots of fun and something to keep! *by on Reviewed in the United States 19 June 2026* Wonderful gift for children. Got this on Amazon last Christmas for my 6 yr old grandson, and he was amazed! Recommend that you break these open outside on a hard surface, and I used an old rag to put the geodes in and a rubber hammer to crack them. I enjoyed this very much myself and I highly recommend this geode set, very reasonably priced! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Love it *by on Reviewed in Singapore 31 March 2022* Great set but be warned, these are quite hard to open. With the regular hammer, I probably had to hit it for a good 20min! I guess it attests to their authenticity ## Frequently Bought Together - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Break Open 10 Premium Geodes – Includes Goggles and 2 Display Stands - Great STEM Science Kit, Geology Gift for Kids, Break Your Own Geodes with Crystals, Toys for Boys and Girls - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Rock Collection Box for Kids – 300+ Piece Gemstones and Crystals Set Includes Geodes and Real Crystals, Rocks and Minerals, Science Kit for Kids, A Geology Gift for Boys and Girls - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Mega Gemstone Dig Kit – Dig Up 15 Real Gemstones and Crystals, Science Kit for Kids, Gem Digging Kit, Gift for Girls and Boys, Mining Kit, Rock Collection --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.be/products/101243481-national-geographic-break-open-10-geodes-top-quality](https://www.desertcart.be/products/101243481-national-geographic-break-open-10-geodes-top-quality) --- *Product available on Desertcart Belgium* *Store origin: BE* *Last updated: 2026-10-26*
