A story of reality and hope
I love the drama of the story and the reality of the characters. Each one responded to the tragedy of the times in ways consistent with the personalities protrayed. The details of her research shown in her footnotes adds integrity.

Needs more detail
Although this book has a good plot outline, it leaves it like that-- just an outline. I found it hard to imagine the setting because of the lack of detail. The characters are not explored at all, and I couldn't relate to any of them. The major characters were uninteresting and lacked detail. This book, while based around a very moving historical event, is one of my least favorite books.
