The saliva is allowed to dry on the black eyepiece and then viewed using the light at the bottom of the tube. When you have finished just wipe the saliva off with a soft barely damp cloth and it is ready to use again. The batteries are replaceable button sr44 which are easy to get. The main thing is not to scratch the lens surface. It should last a couple of years at least I should think. **Q: Do you find this more reliable than opk sticks ? Do you just rub it on your tongue or how to use** A: You put a drop of your saliva directly on to the lens and let it dry then view the pattern. Sorry I don't know what opk sticks are. There is a chart and it tells you what the pattern means. **Q: Does the ferning appears only on the day of ovulation? Or how long before the ovulation it appears? (Worried that it might be too late to be prepared)** A: Hej, it was negative from 8th day of cycle until 15th day. Then it startet to be more and more positive (ferning) each day, but the ovulation still has not come. It is my 21th day od cycle of 32 - 35 days. So, it is definitely not to late. Maybe to early. Love this product! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It Works *by L***A on 24 June 2023* I only found about saliva testing for fertility recently and immediately decided to give it a try. I've used the microscope for one cycle and it worked perfectly (I took a few samples every day to make sure I had put enough saliva on the glass etc..)It showed me my fertile days leading up to ovulation and then after ovulation the fern pattern went away as expected. This device detects (through salt in the saliva) estrogen which is what the Clearblue Fertility Monitor also detects for high days leading up to the LH surge. This device is a lot less expensive! I would highly recommend this product used in conjunction with LH strips.
