Integrity from Arrow and a Masterpiece from Cronenberg: Shivers
Okay, the most important thing first: I bought my copy of the blu-ray / DVD Steelbook in late October 2016 and it was the 2nd Pressing with the previously missing scenes restored. Huge credit to Arrow who said they would fix this and they have. I presume that Amazon's stock is of the newly updated cut Steelbook as this is what they sent me. Great stuff. The film itself looks astonishing. I first saw this on grainy television in the 90s. How far we have come; I never thought I would see the movie looking this clean and refined. The restoration is outstanding as is the sound. Extras include a retrospective and documentary on the making. But the true star is the film in pristine definition.Cronenberg's body horror classic is still just that: a classic. Concepts of sexual impulse, venereal disease, sterility and blandness versus sexual promiscuity and parasites in the body (four years before the latter hit the mainstream with Ridley Scott's "Alien") helped establish the director as a modern master of filmmaking and script writing. The scene with the nurse's monologue to Dr. St Luc is like a live tap into Cronenberg's mind; a wonderful piece of dialogue from somebody who was obviously bristling with unprecedented ideas and themes. Other aspects also help elevate this film to a higher level of movie: beautiful camerawork including some very effective first-person shots, committed acting from the cast, spot-on special effects and mind-blowing sound effects. Cronenberg knows that there are limitations to what he can do budget-wise but, in working this into the film, he is endlessly inventive. This is the serious Seventies of horror. Pre-80s tongue-in-cheek, naff humour and self-indulgence; "Shivers" is an unrelenting dialogue in concepts that echo long after the film credits roll, not least because pretty much everyone can identify with these feelings and fears. In a new era of horror filmmaking, Cronenberg was way ahead of his time.A true classic of horror filmmaking by one of the genuinely great modern masters of cinema. Remarkable.

Uncut version of Cronenberg's film well worth a buy
Another high quality release from Arrow UK. This is a repressing including new blurb on the back of the sleeve "High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the full original Canadian cut." This is the full uncut version. Recent releases in Australia/New Zealand are still the censored MPAA R-rated version. Very effective Cronenberg film and this is the Arrow version to get. You can disregard any concerns about getting the censored version from Amazon UK. Avoid the Australian/New Zealand releases - all Aust/NZ versions are cut, Blu-ray and DVD.

Early Cronenberg greatness.
If this was the only Cronenberg film you ever saw, you’d be forgiven for thinking he was a bit rubbish. But he’s not.

Great release by the way
I just purchased this and it is the UNCUT, second pressing from Arrow. I was unsure if Amazon's stock was the old, problematic release or the new, uncensored re-release but I can confirm it is the latter. Great release by the way, highly recommended.

Shivers DVD/BLU RAY UK EDITION

Recomendable

Neat spin on a zombie movie!
Last time I ordered this, it didn't arrive. So right off the bat I was pumped. Even more-so when it played. Decent flick; a real neat spin on the zombie genre. Kind of similar to 'night of the creeps', only with a science-experiment-gone-wrong instead of aliens, and a lot less campy.

A Great Horror Film: It Keeps You On The Edge.
I don't know the Director, I judge the film merely on my experience with Horror movie viewing. This film is full of surprises and keeps you on the edge through out. People are going crazy when infected and others are just behaving like that normally! You know the symptons and when someone starts displaying sexual promiscuity you don't know if they are infected or normal. It's fun finding out! And if someone is attacked, you don't know if they escaped or were infected! A great suspense drama! Most Erotic Strip Ever!!: I would like to thank the writer/Director for including the Most Erotic Strip Scene I have ever seen in a movie! The scene where the Nurse changes from her uniform into her plain clothes in front of her boyfriend must be the most erotic film scene I have ever seen! She is obviously parading for the Doctor (her boyfriend ) in front of him, while he is talking on his phone! First she undresses and then dresses again in front of him! He is trying to talk science on his phone, while watching his girlfriend undress! Also, at that point, you are wondering if the Nurse has been infected by the disease which makes people develop a strong sexual urge! Anyway, Director, a great strip scene! Thank you! And Thanks for scaring me throughout the movie!

Zombies in Heat
Considering this film was made in the 70's it is pretty well done. One gets a claustrophobic feel due to the constriction of the apartment dwelling in which this movie is set. "Parasites with a Purpose" or "Lust for a Zombie" might have been alternate titles due to the zombie feel and topic of this not so scary horror flic. The sound quality is sub par at best although the picture quality is acceptable. Barbara Steele making out with another cutie was the high point in this rather weak attempt. Not as bad as other 70's drive-in fodder but not as good as it could have been.

Prescient to the 1980's
This rare, early, Cronenberg film, about a human parasite that can emerge from a victim's torso, predates Alien by 4 years. Also appreciate that the pathogen constitutes a deadly, sexually transmitted plague, and that Shivers predates the discovery of AIDS by 6 years. Cronenberg explores a modern but vaguely isolated community where sexuality and promiscuity get out-of-hand, and begin to devour first the adherents of that lifestyle, then random bystanders including the elderly, near the end also enveloping homosexual men, and finally, children. Some characters are known to the audience from the beginning to be infected, whereas the infection-status of other characters remains enigmatic until the end, and the time of their infections remains forever ambiguous. When beautiful nurse Forsythe hands the protagonist the research files he requested, she adds, "... and I also included some other files you might be interested in, from before you came." This reference is never explained nor referred to again, unless you count nurse Forsythe's immediate plea for intimate contact in the form of kissing, quickly followed by her visually impressive disrobing, as some allusion to pre-existing social or medical conditions that might be worth recording.
